"CONTINUATION OF THE MORAL-PROFESSIONAL CRISIS OF JOURNALISM IN SERBIA"

BELGRADE, 11.5.2002. - A number of representatives of the Belgrade press, the Independent Association of Serbian Journalists and individual non-governmental organisations, agreed on Friday that the media scene in Serbia remains plagued by the moral-professional crisis created under the former authorities. At a roundtable on journalism in Serbia, organised by "Danas" and "Republika," participants criticised the authorities, in particular for the absence of a concept of development in the field of media, the inadequacy of legislation and the maintenance of individual mechanisms for the control of the media. Calling for the adoption of a law on lustration, participants in the discussion criticised numerous shortcomings of journalists, noting the inadequacy of education, unfamiliarity with the process of transition, and in particular the absence of analytical texts which could question the statements and negligence of politicians, as well as various statements in society. NUNS president Milica Lucic Cavic said that the quality of journalism in Serbia largely depends on the difficult financial situation of most media. Donations have diminished since the democratic changes, she said.
