IPI AWARD FOR DANAS

VIENNA, May 8, 2002 - Belgrade's daily Danas has won the annual Pioneer of Free Media Award for 2002. The award is conferred by the International Press Institute, the Vienna-based global network of editors, media executives, and prominent journalists in association with the US-based Freedom Forum. The award, which recognises efforts for freedom of the media, will be presented to Danas at the World IPI Congress in Ljubljana on Sunday, May 12. The award goes to Belgrade for the second time in its seven-year history, Radio B92 having won the award in 1998. Other winners have included Russian independent NTV television, the Alliance of Indonesian Journalist, Malaysia Now, the Peruvian Institute for Press and Society and the Ethiopian Journalists Association for Free Media.
